The relationship between dataset size and evaluation requirements is complex and depends on various factors. However, it is generally true that as the dataset size increases, the fraction of the dataset used for evaluation can be decreased.

When evaluating a machine learning model, it is important to ensure that the evaluation results are reliable and representative of the model's performance on unseen data. This is typically achieved by splitting the dataset into training and evaluation sets. The training set is used to train the model, while the evaluation set is used to assess its performance.

In a small dataset, it is essential to allocate a sufficient portion of the data for evaluation. This is because a small dataset may not fully capture the underlying patterns and variations in the data, leading to potential overfitting. Overfitting occurs when a model performs well on the training data but fails to generalize to new, unseen data.

As the dataset size increases, the likelihood of overfitting decreases. With a larger dataset, the model has more examples to learn from, enabling it to capture a wider range of patterns and generalize better. Consequently, a smaller fraction of the dataset can be used for evaluation without compromising the reliability of the evaluation results.

For instance, let's consider a scenario where we have a dataset of 100,000 samples. If we allocate 80% of the data for training and 20% for evaluation, we would have 80,000 samples for training and 20,000 samples for evaluation. This split would likely provide reliable evaluation results.

However, if we had a much larger dataset of 1,000,000 samples, we could allocate a smaller fraction for evaluation, such as 90% for training and 10% for evaluation. In this case, we would have 900,000 samples for training and 100,000 samples for evaluation. The evaluation results obtained from this split would still be reliable due to the increased dataset size.

It is important to note that the specific fraction of the dataset used for evaluation should be determined based on the specific characteristics of the dataset, the complexity of the problem, and the goals of the evaluation. In some cases, it may still be necessary to allocate a larger fraction for evaluation, even with a large dataset, to ensure accurate assessment of the model's performance.

As the dataset size increases, it is generally true that a smaller fraction of the dataset can be used for evaluation without compromising the reliability of the evaluation results. However, the specific fraction should be determined based on various factors and careful consideration of the dataset and evaluation goals.
