What is the difference between cloud SQL and cloud spanner

by virginie Kalenzi / Monday, 18 December 2023 / Published in Cloud Computing, EITC/CL/GCP Google Cloud Platform, GCP overview, GCP Data and Storage overview

Cloud SQL and Cloud Spanner are two popular database services offered by Google Cloud Platform (GCP) that cater to different use cases and have distinct characteristics.

Cloud SQL is a fully managed relational database service that allows users to run MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server databases in the cloud. It offers a familiar SQL interface and supports standard database features such as ACID transactions, replication, and automated backups. Cloud SQL handles tasks like database patching, updates, and backups, relieving users from the burden of managing the underlying infrastructure. It provides high availability through automatic failover and offers vertical scaling options to adjust the performance of the database based on demand. Cloud SQL is suitable for applications that require a traditional relational database model and do not have stringent scalability and global availability requirements.

On the other hand, Cloud Spanner is a globally distributed, horizontally scalable, and strongly consistent relational database service. It is designed to provide high scalability, availability, and global consistency across multiple regions and continents. Cloud Spanner is built on a distributed architecture that allows it to scale horizontally by adding more nodes to the database. It uses a distributed transaction protocol to ensure strong consistency, even in the face of failures and network partitions. Cloud Spanner is ideal for applications that require global scale, strong consistency, and high availability, such as financial systems, e-commerce platforms, and global inventory management systems.

One of the key differences between Cloud SQL and Cloud Spanner is their scalability and global availability. While Cloud SQL offers vertical scaling options to adjust the performance of a single database instance, Cloud Spanner allows horizontal scaling by distributing the data across multiple nodes and regions. This makes Cloud Spanner a better choice for applications that need to handle large amounts of data and require global availability.

Another difference is the level of consistency provided by the two services. Cloud SQL provides eventual consistency, which means that changes made to the database may take some time to propagate across replicas. On the other hand, Cloud Spanner offers strong consistency, ensuring that the data is always up-to-date and consistent across all replicas and regions. This makes Cloud Spanner suitable for applications that require strict consistency guarantees, such as financial and transactional systems.

Additionally, Cloud Spanner provides a more complex pricing model compared to Cloud SQL. Cloud Spanner pricing is based on the amount of storage used, the number of nodes, and the amount of data transferred, while Cloud SQL pricing is primarily based on the instance size and storage capacity. Users should carefully consider their specific requirements and workload patterns to choose the most cost-effective option.

Cloud SQL and Cloud Spanner are two different database services offered by Google Cloud Platform. Cloud SQL is a fully managed relational database service suitable for applications that require a traditional relational database model, while Cloud Spanner is a globally distributed, horizontally scalable, and strongly consistent database service designed for applications that need global scale and strong consistency guarantees.
